Artist’s Note

A pic that I’ve drawn of young Pocahontas with her mother, Nonoma.

“Last Night with Mom”

I called this pic “Last night with mom”, because I imagined this could be the last night of Pocahontas with her mother, to say it more clearly, Pocahontas’ mother will die the next day of this pic. I know it’s sad, but In Disney’s Pocahontas movie, her mother was “revealed to have been dead for years” (Wikipedia) and Pocahontas “has her mother’s spirit” (Disney), So I guess her mother was dead when Pocahontas was young.

In real history, Chief Powhatan had so many wives, and once a wife gives birth to a child he sends her back to her home: She’s no more his wife.

The name “Nonoma”
In History, “ Nonoma Winanuske ” is the name of one of Chief Powhatan’s wives. Powhatan had several wives, 20 sons and 10 daughters.
Then, it was revealed that Nonoma was Pocahontas’ mother.
So I decided to call her mother “Nonoma”

Pocahontas’ Mother’s look
Well yep, I know, the mother doesn’t really look like her daughter. It’s just the eyes that look like Pocahontas’, but I’ve drawn Pocahontas closing her eyes
And also maybe the hair, but I’ve drawn the mother’s hair in Dark brown, but Pocahontas has black hair.

Young Pocahontas
Well I’ve tried as much as I can to make Pocahontas look cute… The dress, I’ve drawn the same one she always wears. She doesn’t wear the necklace because her mother wears it, and Chief Powhatan still didn’t give her it.
